Proposed Camping and Caravan Site

Well done to all those involved in organising the public meeting on the proposed camping and caravan site last night. It was a packed room, and the speakers were both informative and passionate in their concerns – very much a Saltburn combination. Among the variety of objections raised, I think the traffic issues involve the most wishful thinking on the part of the applicant. Clearly there will be a problem if visitors staying on the site bring their cars to the seafront and the town on busy days, and the idea that visitors are going to travel to the site by train, then bus or taxi, is very unrealistic. The idea of a Public Inquiry was raised, and I think this would be a good way to address residents objections and give full voice to them.

I support the idea of a camping site in Saltburn, and think our businesses would benefit, but not from a large site in this location with its own eating and drinking facilities, and which also has a big Asda just round the corner.

Failing school to be taken over by Outwood as unions launch ‘no confidence’ ballot in former leadership – Teesside Live

The struggling school will be transferred to Outwood as its current sponsor, AET, faces a ‘no confidence’ vote from unions

This is one of the last achievements of the Labour Council I was proud to be a Cabinet member in. I am sure that, had we not fought so hard for a better future for this school, it would still be in the hands of the discredited and cynical Academies Enterprise Trust (AET). Sue Jeffrey and I met with AET but nothing changed. Eventually we got a meeting with the Regional Schools Commissioner, but nothing changed. Finally we managed to get to the National Schools Commissioner in London, with our Director of Children’s Services and Head of Education. The National Commissioner obviously had a very close relationship with the CEO of AET, which raises a lot of issues in itself, but he agreed to come up to the school. The night before he came, part of the disused Eston Park site, which AET we’re responsible for, burnt down because they neglected it. The Council had to pay to demolish it because AET wouldn’t, and we couldn’t risk anyone getting injured or killed on the site. The public sector bailing out private business again. I went back down to London to see the National Commissioner yet again, even though he didn’t want me in the meeting, and finally the school has been taken away from AET. I know there have been problems with Outwood’s lack of inclusiveness and failure to understand the needs of all their pupils in the past, but I assume they have learnt their lesson from the publicity they received over that, and Ofsted’s new approach, and will give Hillsview the new start it really needs. Best wishes to all the staff, pupils parents and teachers there.

And to the incoming administration – this is how hard you have to work for the borough to make things change.

Good News for Hillsview Academy

It gives me great pleasure to announce that, after four years of fighting for the interests of pupils at Hillsview Academy and their families, we have finally succeeded in getting the incompetent and untrustworthy Academies Enterprise Trust removed from the school. It was a really hard battle but definitely worth it. I wish all those at the school a brilliant future and I know Redcar and Cleveland Council will help and support in any way we can.

50 Years since Kestral for a Knave was published: what has changed?

This is an extract from a very impressive speech by the incoming President of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services, Rachel Dickinson:

“It’s also 50 years this year since penguin books first published Barry Hines’ novel A Kestrel for a Knave. Barry was born and bred in a small village on the outskirts of Barnsley. His novel crackles with local colour, beauty and some choice northern working-class phrases. At the time, and possibly even still now, the North was thought of as a place filled with dark satanic mills, mines, pits and factories. Hines’ novel describes Barnsley surrounded by beautiful Pennine countryside, but it also depicts the less than bucolic life of a young working-class lad, Billy Casper. I’ve recently re-acquainted myself with this novel and it made me wonder just how different are things today for working-class youngsters than they were for Billy 50 years ago, not just in Barnsley but all over the country? Billy lived in poverty, despite coming from a working household. No carpets or central heating in Billy’s home.

Billy sometimes attended a secondary modern school. That would be a comprehensive Academy school now although the founding principles of a ‘comprehensive’ education have not seriously been pursued by any government over the intervening decades. For a youngster like Billy, who could not be described as ‘academic’, school is a disenfranchising experience. He does have aspiration and ambition though – to train a young kestrel which requires him to master technical language and the skills of falconry. Today the curriculum in school is narrowing and focussed on academic attainment, no GCSE in nature studies for modern-day Billy Caspers.”

An endorsement from Vicky Parker, Saltburn resident

My family and I have known Craig for many years and have seen what a great job he has done as our local representative, he is always approachable and follows through on his commitments.

Craig does not do things for personal glory or status he is a genuine man of good heart who brings knowledge and compassion to every aspect of his life from working to improve children’s services to standing beside constituents and colleagues in difficult times.

Craig has shown he is passionate about local community and dedicated to making positive changes for all especially for the most vulnerable in our area. A man always kind, supportive and generous of spirit – genuinely one of life’s good guys.

Tearful school boss won’t give up on kids despite culture of fear on corridors – Teesside Live

041B4B48-DD84-4860-8603-33E923CAC5DCFreebrough Academy in Brotton was put in special measures after a scathing Ofsted report
— Read on www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/tearful-school-boss-wont-give-15926739

As the R&C Cabinet Member for Education, I know that the failure of this school is caused by academisation. There is simply no proper system, and the Govt have cut funding, in other words a perfect storm. Your elected Council has no say because it’s an academy, and the Govt has removed our Education money so we can’t even give them much help. When things go wrong, senior civil servants are supposedly in charge, but they can’t do much either because there is no proper system. So they put their faith in ambitious individual heads, who get over promoted and overpaid, and then fail because they really weren’t that special. There is no accountability to the public, because these are private institutions, so they don’t respond to the struggles of families because they have their own agenda. The new Trust has evicted a huge number of children from the school. So where are those children during the school day, are they safe? I recognise that they have to get control of the school because the previous leadership has ruined it, but I do not believe that also ruining the life chances of children to increase the income of a business has anything to do with the meaning of education. If you vote Labour locally on May 2nd you will send these self-serving corporate organisations a big message, and if you vote Labour in the next General Election you will terminate this chaotic and child-damaging lunacy.

So Much Litter!

Walking the dog on Marine Parade the other day, I was shocked by the amount of litter on the banks: everything from baby wipes to bottles to plastic cups and food containers. So I climbed over the railing with my litter-picker this morning, and filled three bin liners just between the steps down at the Look Out and the next ones along to the west. There are an awful lot of people who won’t walk a few metres to the bin!
